Everyone has their own way to relax, and for me, watching dramas seems to be a good way to release the stress. However, unlike most people enjoy watching Korean dramas, I prefer American dramas more. Nevertheless, I am not saying that I don’t like the romantic plots and the good-looking actresses and actors in the Korean dramas, I am just saying that the themes and the realness in the American dramas are more my cup of tea.

Now, back to the topic, I want to share an American drama that I have been deeply obsessed with recently, which is the one called the New Amsterdam. It is a medical drama that focuses on the new changes that the newly-appointed medical director, Max, brings to the hospital. In addition to those innovative changes, this drama also covers a lot of diversity issues, for example, it talks about the balance between career and marriage, perspective about death, the way to face yourself, trust between people, and all kinds of adversities that people may face in their lives. In my opinion, this drama acts not only a good recreation but also a helpful life mentor to me.

Among the two seasons that I’ve watched, there’s not even single one of episodes that haven’t made me plunge deep into contemplation. Still, there is one that catches my attention the most, which is the episode called 14 Years, 2 Months, 8 Days. From this title it may be a little bit tricky to tell the content, but since it is a medical drama, I guess most people might have the same guess like I do. Yes, you’re right if you guess it’s the time span that someone fall into coma. The patient in deep coma who was once a father of two children. The reason I say “was” rather than “is” is because after fourteen years’ long waiting, the two children already deem their father as a dead person. The only person that still can’t come to term with the reality is their mother. She still thinks that as long as she doesn’t give up on her husband, then there will still be a chance for her love one to wake up from the coma.

I know it is hard or even heartbreaking to admit the death of your love one, but if it affects the relationship with your still alive family members, it will be a totally different case. The mother in that episode is an exact example that let the death alienate her from her children, which is such a pity. As the old saying goes, gone are the past; catch the future, and thus as you are mourning for your lost, you should also be aware of what you have and cherish them. After seeing this episode, I have a lot of feeling in my heart because death is the end of every life and it requires a lot of courage to face it. However, since I can’t change the fact that death is closer and closer as the day passes by, the only thing that I can do is love and appreciate the people around me.
Every episode like the above-mentioned one in New Amsterdam gives me a lesson about life. Therefore, I strongly recommend you guys to watch it in your free time because there’s definitely something that you can pick up from it. No matter is the cool English phrases or the heartwarming story, there is something for everyone!
